6.6 Magnitude Earthquake hits Indonesia (March 18)

A huge earthquake shakes the Indonesia's Molucca Sea on Wednesday (March 18), but no tsunami alert issued according to the US Geological Survey. A 6.6 magnitude quake struck the Indonesia undersea.


The USGS said, the earthquake hits at a depth of 41km, 134km northwest of Kota Ternate at 6.12am Pacific Time. There's no casualties no damage and no tsunami.

The Indonesia's meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency said, the earthquake was moderately felt in Manado, on Sulawesi island, and on the island of Ternate. They added that there had been no reports of damage.

"Ring of Fire" is an area where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur in the basin of the Pacific Ocean, where also the Indonesia placed.

In year 2004, a huge undersea quake hits Indonesia where the tsunami killed more than 170,000 people in Aceh province.
